Michelle Obama (Getty) Last week, Michelle Obama made headlines when she donned a flame red Alexander McQueen gown to greet the People's Republic of China President Hu Jintao.
While fashion fans lauded the first lady's highly modern selection, designer Oscar de la Renta could not hold back his disapproval, telling WWD, "My understanding is that the visit was to promote American-Chinese trade—American products in China and Chinese products in America. Why do you wear European clothes?"
Apparently displeased by the reaction to his comments, Mr. de la Renta has elaborated on his point to WWD, insisting, "It's not [intended] to be negative. Do you think Kate Middleton is going to be married in Marc Jacobs? Or you'd see Carla Bruni dressing in American clothes? This is a big industry in this country. Mrs. Obama does look great. She should take that and do something. She could do a great good for our industry. We need to create jobs here, jobs on Seventh Avenue, too."
Now, with President Obama due to make his State of the Union address tonight, all eyes are likely to be on Michelle once again. Do you think it's her responsibility to wear American?
